Stun Guns

Why do I need a stun gun?

Be prepared in the event the unthinkable occurs! If it becomes necessary to defend yourself or a loved one from an attacker, having a stun gun handy will help you get away.Take self defense into your own hands, BEFORE you need it! Ultimately the most powerful stun gun on the market is the one in your hands when you need it!

What are stun guns?

They are battery-operated, electronic devices designed to shock and incapacitate an assailant. You may not even have to "stun" someone to stop an attack. It may only be necessary to show them your stun gun and "test fire" it. The sight of the electrical arc flashing and sound of loud crackling can cause a would-be assailant to run in the opposite direction.

How do they work?

Most stun guns have two electrodes on the top or on the side of the device that you press against an assailant while you push a "trigger" button which shoots a powerful, non-lethal electric current through their clothing and into their body. Please note that you will not hear the zapping sound when it is touching someone like when you discharge the taser into the air.

Can stun guns go through clothes?

Yes, all tasers will go through thin clothing. The higher the voltage, the more effective it is to go through thicker clothing. So it's best to buy the highest voltage you can afford because a high voltage taser is the most powerful stun gun on the market. If you have a low voltage stun gun, make sure you touch the assailant on their skin to avoid questioning if it will work.

What is the best stun gun to buy?

There are many different styles, strength, sizes, and colors of tasers. Everyone is different so the one best for you depends on where you will use it, how you want to carry it, and how much you can afford. If you can't afford the most expensive, don't fret. Even low cost stun guns can be extremely effective. The supposed most powerful stun gun on the market may not be best for you if you can't afford it or it's too big for your purposes.

Check out different brands, such as Stun Master, Vipertek, Zap, Streetwise, Guard dog, Sabre, and Safety Technology to name a few.

What voltage is best?

The voltage is what pushes the electric current, so the higher the voltage, the more effective the device. Also the higher the voltage, the better it will pass through thick clothing. The general rule of thumb is to buy the highest voltage stun gun you can afford. A 20 million volt taser isn't very expensive.

What are the effects?

Just a few seconds is sufficient to render a large, strong person helpless. The shock will cause the attacker to lose control of their muscles and possibly fall to the ground in pain, disoriented and confused. Stun guns don’t kill or cause permanent injury, such as a heart attack. The effects of being "stunned" can disable at attacker for a few minutes to a half-hour or more, giving you time to escape.

Can stun guns knock you out?

No, they can't knock you out. However, the longer you hold it against someone, the more effected they will be. Being zapped for a second will cause pain and probably repel the attacker. Being shocked for 2-3 seconds will cause increased pain and muscle spasms. Being touched longer will likely cause disorientation and loss of muscle control.

Would I get zapped if the person I'm shocking touches me?

No, the current is not high enough for you to get shocked, even if the person is touching you.

Do they work on dogs?

These products weren't designed to be used on dogs. However, in self defense of a dog attack, yes, the dog will be effected. In fact, try discharging the taser into the air if the dog is far away and it may get scared and run.

How do you charge a stun gun?

Most are rechargeable. Some come with power cords. Some have electrical prongs that slide out and plug into standard outlets. To make sure it stays charged you can plug it in for a few hours every month or two. You can check the battery by firing the weapon. You will be able to tell if the current is weak or strong by the sound and light you see. If you have a flashlight stun gun and use the lamp often, you may want to charge more often.

Are stun guns legal?

Be aware of the laws in your area; some states and municipalities restrict the possession and use of stun guns. If you are unsure of the law, do some research before purchasing a stun gun. If you try to have a taser delivered to a restricted area, your order will be rejected.

The following states have stun gun restrictions:

  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Rhode Island
  • Wisconsin

The following cities have stun gun restrictions:

  • Chicago
  • Denison/Crawford County, IA
  • Philadelphia
