What is in pepper spray?

It is important to understand what is in the spray when you are planning to keep it on hand for personal and property protection. They contain Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), which is a naturally occurring chemical found in the oil of various hot peppers, the same ones we use to make foods spicy.

What are the effects of OC spray?

Have you ever eaten a hot pepper or accidentally rubbed your eyes after cutting up a pepper? If so, you are fully aware of the effect the oil of a hot pepper is capable of producing. When sprayed into the face of an assailant, the effects are powerful.

OC causes an almost immediate burning sensation on the skin, but even more importantly, it causes severe burning and swelling of the eyes. The person will find it difficult or impossible to open their eyes and may experience temporary blindness.

When inhaled, OC affects the tissues of the nose, mouth, throat, and lungs. The mucous membranes will become inflamed and swollen, causing temporary breathing difficulty and intense, uncontrollable coughing. The effects are powerful enough to provide the victim a chance to escape.

Can pepper spray damage eyes?

There is no conclusive evidence to suggest that pepper spray will cause permanent damage to the eye, however repeated exposure could certainly cause permanent damage to the cornea.

Are pepper spray and mace the same thing?

It depends. Mace is brand of pepper spray and tear gas. Other brands of pepper spray are Pepper Shot, Sabre Red, and Wildfire. Pepper spray is the chemical oleoresin capsicum (OC). Tear gas is ω-chloroacetophenone (CN). They are 2 different chemicals, but both lachrymatory agents, meaning they cause tearing of the eyes and irritate mucous membranes, causing sneezing, coughing, pain, and difficulty breathing. Both are considered non-lethal.

How much does it cost?

To buy cheap pepper spray, you will pay around $5 to $20. The large canister sprays and pepper guns can cost about $50 to $60.

Are pepper sprays legal?

Be aware that local laws in some states, cities, and municipalities restrict their possession and use. If you are unfamiliar with the laws in your area, do some research before your purchase.

Can it go in checked luggage?

One 4 fl. oz. (118 ml) container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. Self-defense sprays containing more than 2 percent by mass of tear gas (CS or CN) are prohibited in checked baggage.

You may not carry it in a carry-on bag.

We recommend checking with your airline as some airlines may not allow this item on board the aircraft.

Does pepper spray have an expiration date?

Yes, somewhere on the canister there should be an expiration date. Most pepper sprays have a shelf-life of 2-4 years. If the device is expired, don't use it because the aerosol component can degrade over time. This may cause it to spray as shorter distance, thereby making it ineffective against an attacker. If it's expired, replace it.

When can you pepper spray someone?

As long as it is legal in the state and city, you may legally use pepper spray for self defense only. If you feel threatened or are in danger, you can use your spray. It isn't a toy, don't use it to prank anyone!

Can you have pepper spray at college?

If it is legal in that state and city, then, yes, you may carry it on a college campus.

Does it work on animals?

Yes, the products made for humans can work on some animals, but not all. There are sprays made specifically for dogs and bears.

The ones for dogs or bears are slightly less potent than that for humans because animals are more sensitive. These sprays made specifically for animals are considered humane. So, if you are just out for a jog and afraid of dogs, then you could in theory carry only one spray that is made for humans and it would be effective for both. But it is more humane to use the less strong dog spray on a dog.

If you are camping in an area that has bears or other large animals, it is wise to carry one specifically for bears and one for humans. The product made for bears will shoot farther than one made for humans, which you will want if you're being charged by a large animal.
