What is a taser?

Great personal protection devices! A Taser is a type of stun gun with shooting tethered electrodes that attach to the assailant's skin with barbs. Read more below to read more about tasers and decide with is the best taser for self defense for your particular needs.

Are tasers and stun guns the same thing?

All Tasers are stun guns, but NOT all stun guns are Tasers. Unlike regular stun guns that require actual contact with an attacker, tasers can be fired up to 15 feet away.

How do they work?

The Taser is a specialized stun gun. When it is fired, compressed nitrogen sends out two probes, which are each attached to 15 feet of fine wire. These probes with barbed ends attach to the subject's skin, even through clothing. 50,000 volts travel down the wires. This will render even a large, strong attacker helpless. See the video below to view exactly how it works

What are the effects?

A taser is a non-lethal weapon that uses a high voltage, low amperage electrical signal, thereby, causing no permanent damage and having only temporary effects. The electric current will cause involuntary muscle contractions and sensory stimulation. The attacker will be unable to control their own movements and will likely fall down. This is how most taser related injuries occur, the fall to the ground.

The effects are not dependent on level of pain tolerance. It is still effective on people who have a high level of pain tolerance.

Can tasers cause cardiac arrest?

The role of tasers in sudden cardiac death is controversial. According to an article published in the January 2014 issue of “Circulation,” of the more than 3 million total Taser applications, there have been 12 published case reports suggesting a potential cardiac arrest link. Cases of sudden death have been associated with drug use and heart disease, but risks for individuals in these situations have not been clearly established.

The manufacturer states that they were designed to affect only skeletal muscles, not the heart muscle.

Do tasers leave marks?

Yes, they leave puncture wounds on the skin from the barbed electrodes that are designed to stay in the skin and not fall out.

How far do these devices shoot?

They shoot up to 15 feet away. It is a great advantage to be able to defend yourself from a distance. You do want to be at least 3 feet away or the probes will not be far enough apart to work appropriately. So don't fire on a very close attacker.

Are tasers legal?

Be aware of the laws in your area; some states and municipalities restrict the possession and use of tasers. If you are unsure of the law, do some research before purchasing one. If you try to buy taser guns online and have it shipped to a restricted area, the transaction will be declined.

What is the best taser for personal protection?

All tasers work similarly. Some of the differences are price, number of cartridges it holds, grip style, and size. Like most products, what is best for you might not be best for the next guy. Do some research to decide which is the best taser for self defense that meets you wants and needs. Any of these are a good self defense taser for women to carry.

The Taser Bolt and Taser Pulse are both a good home defense taser. They are smaller and much less expensive than the X2 and X26P Tasers. The Pulse, X2, and X26P have grips like a gun. The Bolt is a bit different. Check out its page to see the different grip style.

They are all equipped with lithium rechargeable battery packs.

What tasers do police use?

Police use both the Taser X2 and Taser X26P, which may lead you to believe these either is the best taser for self defense. The Taser Pulse is similar in style with a less expensive price.

Who manufactures tasers?

Our models, X2, X26P, Bolt, and Pulse, are all manufactured by Axon, formerly Taser International. This company also produces the civilian devices, the Bolt and Pulse.
