Are pepper spray and mace the same?

In the past, they were two different products which is why there is confusing surrounding mace and pepper spray.

When a product contains mace, the content is a chemical irritant similar to tear gas. The chemical name is Phenacyl chloride or CN. It is known for causing damage to the eye, especially in large concentrations. Also, it is ineffective against intoxicated criminals. This product isn't widely used due to the disadvantages.

Today, the brand name Mace, refers to OC or pepper spray. There are still a few Mace products that have both OC spray and small amounts of CN, the chemical mace. So when considering to buy mace vs pepper spray, know that most of them are exactly the same thing. They are both defense sprays to prevent an attack by a criminal. They both shoot out a stream of pepper solution. Read the ingredient label and that will help you determine if CN is present or not. Mace and other brands of pepper spray, such as Wildfire, Pepper Shot, Sabre Red, or Fox Labs are all available as key ring devices, small pocket sized sprays, or large models for home defense.
